The History of the Lyndon Outing Club’s First Rope Tow Constructed on Baril Hill in 1938

This wonderful old photo is of the very first Lyndon Outing Club rope tow in 1940. At that time, the LOC was located on Baril Hill on a farm rented from Oscar Baril in the Fletcher School District of Lyndonville, Vermont. Baril Hill was located on Hog Street (now Lily Pond Road), a mile north of our present location at Shonyo Park. The rope tow was 300 feet long, serving a 1/2 mile slope with a 35-meter ski jump. The hill was lit by eight 1000 candle-powered floodlights and five 500 candle-powered floodlights. The lighted slope and rope tow officially opened on February 5th, 1938, and was made possible largely through cooperation with Lyndonville’s merchants. The hill also featured a toboggan shoot, cross country skiing, downhill trails, and slalom runs. Admission was 1 dollar for adults, 50 cents for high school students, and 25 cents for graded students.
